MOBILE DJ

The 1970s, 1980s, & 1990s… It was my pinnacle in dozens of stations from Radio, to Television, Nightclubs and as a Mobile DJ. They were great decades to be a DJ. We were as popular as Rock Stars, Bands and Celebrities. We brought and played the top hits of music to the airwaves and live in different venues… Hotel Ballrooms, Country Clubs, and High End Nightclubs. The largest was Graham Central Station in Odessa Texas in a former Grocery Store it accommodated several thousands on the weeknights and close to 7,000 on the weekends.

In those decades socializing was in-person and phone communication came with a cord plugged into a wall or a phone booth. People actually spoke to each other without hesitation. Talking about jobs, dreams or sports. Men asked women to dance, bought them drinks and relationships started from meeting in clubs, the workplace or just on the town. These days etiquette is a warning texts to schedule a call. today ask to see if there’s a safe space for speaking one to one in a call. How times have changed.

In 2025 when people need a DJ they either do a web search or taking a referral from someone they know. Wedding engineering Ceremony sound ,Wedding Receptions or Private Party Dancing offers different styles, mixing and often something missing to appeal to the entire crowd.

Most DJ’s today bring 200-300 of the most requested songs to an event and then mix high octane BPM - Beats Per Minute - with portions of popular hit songs for a non stop RAVE with hopefully a packed Dance Floor. But styles and mixing varries as it should. DJ’s shouldn’t be just copy cats of this one type of style.

Some people fast thirty, sixty or ninety seconds of songs before mixing to another is because the dancers have short of attention spans. However, that wasn’t true in the 1980s. We danced to extended dance 12” records and at the speed and intent of the original recording. That’s what Steve Myers DJ Bandstand offers in a throwback to the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. We intentionally party like it’s 1999!

Wedding Couples Regrets

Many couples post their receptions watching their Reception Video a often regret the type of DJ they hired, wish they had invested more in the performance and note how much of their own receptions they missed. Many regret how few who attended actually were able to dance to something they liked or at worse became bored and went home early.

DIFFERENCE

When you research the options you quickly learn there is a difference between most of the DJs performing these days from the Specialists. When you consult Steve Myers he offers to all his clients something much better. “We DJ Better!”

Our Philosophy counsels couples and corporate clients how to program music for the night. SMDJB starts with the spoken words. We script the evening like a radio. television or film script. A road map guideline to the night. The script highlights all the critical announcements to be made, when and for how long. We also script out formats of music. Music blocks to accommodate all of your guests attending.

We don’t measure success with a packed dance floor - we measure success when every one attending gets to dance to something they love even if it’s just one couple on the dance floor. We measure success of the reception by the MUST HAVE songs couples wish to dance to. Watch those videos and you’ll see them greet their guests, mingle from table to table and thank each for attending and whatever gift they have given the couple. Couples actually get to snack on things and have drinks, use the facilities and on special songs turn the dance floor into a huge party.

Old School DJ’s

SMDJD is an Old School Retro Music Specialist as a DJ Service. We play records the way the original artists recorded them in full versions then mix from one song to the next of the same or different formats not just after 30, 60 or 90 seconds but sometime the full length of the song or versions. We provide a RECEPTION to remember and not just a RAVE. There is a huge difference in that philosophy.

Much like a nightclub of the 70s, 80s or 1990s we offer different genres of Music in different speeds of dancing. Slow romantic songs, into Medium tempo to Fast songs in categories of Country, Rock, Disco, 80s Dance, Oldies from the 1940s to the 2000s, including Motown, Top 40, Early pioneers of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Our extensive top 100 libraries of each year include Radio and Nightclub Hits of over 8 decades. We feature Big Band to the Rat Pack, 50s & 60s Gold, 70s & 80s dance hits into the diversity of the 1990s and beyond.

Like a nightclub of the 1980s and 1990s we creating segments of each hour in different categories. We consult with our couples of one, two, three or more themes in sets from slow to fast in paced segments. That includes Line Dances which many present DJs no longer offer for play. Not everyone who attends a wedding is there as a couple. Singles still like the line dances and we rotate the dance floor of dancers.

Dancing shouldn’t be a nonstop drunken RAVE. It should be a paced party rotating dancers and giving enough time for each song to dance it through while others at the tables are not so blown out in loudness to enjoy conversations at tables with other guests, their drinks, food, dessert or just rest.

SMDJB offers extensive record collection libraries in digital hard drives including back up libraries. We can plan Country Music Theme Parties, spiced with Rock or Disco classic hits or the opposite. We also spice the night with romantic love songs. Even line dances.

Pick a Theme you want to recreate. Country, Rock, Disco, Dance 80s Hits of the MTV generation with music videos, or popular 80s 90s to early 2000s song titles. Other variations include Motown classics from the 50s to the 80s, 50s 60s Surf or Beach Music for outdoor parties, 1940s 50s Big Band from Swing to Ballroom including the Foxtrot to the Tango. And nothing says romance like a classic love song from the 1930s to the present times.

NO PLAY LISTS by Couples specific supervision. Not all songs are appropriate for all guests. SMDJB strives to play clean versions as a rule but will offer more explicit versions based on the preferences of the couples and their families attending.

SMDJB works as a team player

Steve Myers DJ Bandstand also strives to serve our clients by working hand in hand with their venue, bar tenders, servers, photographers and/or videographers as a team. Essentially we are serving each other and our client to whatever they wish to have.

CONTRACTS ARE SPECIFIC

There are specific rules and requirements in our contracts but it’s worth mentioning that we work to provide a good time for all in attendance. If a guest becomes a security problem we specify requirements of the hosts to work with security to remove the danger to any guest including ourselves. While requests are possible we will not play any song from a guest iPhone/device and we do not stream music as a rule. Not from Spotify, Apple or other vendors. That’s why we preplanning services to our couples and clients to gather from guests or family must play songs for the night. We also play by the rules. That includes any venue or city, town or ordinance of sound restrictions and specific hours played. We carry DB meters to adhere to written standards and cooperate with venues and/or security officers.
